SUMMARY:Book Discussion
DESCRIPTION:First UMC has a book discussion group with all welcome\, even if you haven’t read the book! Our next book will be\, A Paradise Built in Hell by Rebecca Solnit. It is about extraordinary communities that arise in disaster. This book points to a new vision of what society could become – one that is less authoritarian and fearful\, more collaborative and local. Bill McKibben says\, “This is the freshest\, deepest\, most optimistic account of human nature I’ve come across in many years.” We will meet to discuss it on Saturday\, June 20\, at 10am in the church library.

SUMMARY:Book Discussion
DESCRIPTION:FUMC has a book discussion group (sort of like a book club). We don’t have a regular meeting date\, because we wait until we finish one discussion and then we pick the next book and date for the next discussion. All are welcome. Our next book will be\, A Paradise Built in Hell by Rebecca Solnit. It is about extraordinary communities that arise in disaster. This book points to a new vision of what society could become – one that is less authoritarian and fearful\, more collaborative and local. Bill McKibben says\, “This is the freshest\, deepest\, most optimistic account of human nature I’ve come across in many years.”\n If you would like to join us\, get the book and read it\, or not – you can come even if you don’t read the book. We will meet to discuss it on Saturday\, June 20 at 10 am in the church library. If you have any questions\, speak to Dana Carroll or contact the church office.

SUMMARY:Book Discussion - Jesus and the Disinherited
DESCRIPTION:Our next book discussion will be held on Saturday\, May 13th. The Intersectional Justice Committee has selected Howard Thurman’s book\, Jesus and the Disinherited. Martin Luther King\, Jr. and his coworkers used to carry this book with them. They sought inspiration from it in the days leading to the Montgomery bus boycott; it helped shape the civil rights movement and change history.\nWe gather at 10:00 am in Fellowship Hall and are often done by 11:30. Some folks have the opportunity to read the whole book while others may only have an opportunity to read a few chapters\, but the conversation is always a lively exchange of ideas. \nEveryone is welcome.
